Verge Serve

We are all called to serve and are gifted with the ability to curate an

environment where we meet the needs of one another.

There is a deep calling in our lives to serve others. It has been imprinted on our internal conscience since the beginning. We are created to give back. We desire to serve others. The average person dedicates approximately 50 hours of community service each year. Why do we have this desire? Because we are made in the image of God and we are created to serve. Jesus said that He did not come to be served, but to serve (Mark 10:45). We follow Jesus in this calling to serve. Our service as Christ-centered people is given out of our freedom to fulfill our calling and is based on the love of Christ for others.

Sunday Serve - and beyond

The focus of our attention is Jesus, and to care for the needs of others. Serving others and allowing others to serve us changes the environment. On Sunday, we are here to both give and receive. This is not just one person’s calling. It is all of ours and is vital for a healthy Christian to flourish in their relationship with Jesus. It's not just a Sunday function either. There are many ways we can serve each other during the week. New ministries arise based on new needs of the church community and the people God is leading in the church to meet those new needs.

Spiritual Gifts - equipping the church

Each and every one of us has a ministry. It may not be “apostle” as Paul’s was, but every believer carries with them a unique spiritual gift (Eph 4:11-13) that defines our attitude and disposition toward ministering together, living out the gospel in common life, and serving one another (Romans 12). This spiritual gift empowers us to fulfill our ministry (1 Cor. 12:1-11). Our ministry is not to be thought of as a high position but a low position (Jn. 3:30). Ministry is servanthood (Lk . 22:27). Paul was not living a high life as a social influencer but saw his ministry through the lens of a waiter waiting on tables. The greatest is not looked at through our earthly expressions.

We bring relief, support, and ministry to those around us at church. Serving is a calling, and we are gifted uniquely to help meet the needs of the church. There are many ways people use their gifts. Some sing, others serve coffee, cook food, visit others in hospitals, help people move into a new home, and the list of ways we serve is endless (Rom. 12:6-8). We also lead others with our gifts (Eph. 4:11), give wisdom, faith, and knowledge (1 Cor. 12). The church is here to equip the called in their gifts to serve others.

There are 3 ways to discover your spiritual gifts.

Self-Discovery: You can take time to read the scripture passages referenced in this section and talk to those around you about what they see in you. If you are a follower of Jesus, you may already see how god is using you, and others can testify to that work.

Assessments: There are several free assessments available to help individuals discover their unique gifts. You can download this assessment here to learn more.

Equipping: We have a class focused on the gifts described in Ephesians 4:11. These gifts were given by Jesus to help equip the church for its work. We use an assessment called the 5Q, and you can sign up for that class at our Verge University Online Platform.
