Verge Community

We are called into a church community to live for Jesus together,

share meals together, pray for one another, and live life together.

We see in Acts 2:42-48 that we are all called to be part of a biblical community. Community is not a new word, and it is not exclusive to the church. However, the church differs from the general definition, which typically symbolizes a group of people who share the same likes, dislikes, and affinities. The biblical community is different. We do not have a desire to find those who are the same. It is a group of great diversity. The uniqueness of that community lies in the eclectic mix of people from diverse backgrounds, varying thoughts on life, and at various stages in their faith journey.

This uniqueness of biblical community is held together by Jesus (Matthew 16:18-19) as He builds the church. The Bible talks about this deep fellowship that you can have when you become a believer. You become a part of the body of Christ. And being a part of that body means being a part of a community, a fellowship of people, and a bond that’s stronger than any other. Living the Christian life means opening your life up, not secluding it for a few, but sharing in the joys and struggles of life with others.

Community Groups - sharing life together

As we examine Scripture to see what the first-century church looked like, we quickly discover groups of people working out their faith together. That means they had to resolve differences with the help of their church leader, such as Paul, Peter, Timothy, Titus, and others. Growing in your faith is a process that cannot be accomplished in isolation. Faith is “exercised”; it is worked out in the context of the church. John 13:34-35: Jesus gives a new commandment to love one another, just as He loved us. It is how people will know we are his disciples. The community groups at Verge carry out this commandment. It is a place where we can love one another. We share in the joys. We learn together. We encourage one another. We work out our faith together.

We grow together. So, how do we carry this out?

Scripture: We will take an overview approach to the scripture passage from Sunday’ sermon series or book study. We ask questions, share our thoughts, and listen to one another as we work out our faith in Jesus. Group leaders are equipped to lead their groups each week during our community group season. (Acts 17:11; 5:42; Hebrews 4:12)

Fellowship: Outside of our structured time, we connect with others in our group. Having lunch, dinner with them, or calling or texting them. During our group time, we spend quality time together in fellowship. Looking for ways to encourage one another. (1 John 1:7; 1 Thes 5:11; Hebrews 10:25)

Prayer: We want to take the time to care for the needs within our groups. We pray for each other. During our meeting times, we break into small groups to spend time praying for each other. James 5:16; Ephesians 6:18; 1 Timothy 2:1

Meals: We have food every week, and once a quarter (or weekly, depending on the group), we want groups to have dinner together. In the gospels, there are at least 14 references to Jesus eating with others. (Acts 2:46; Matthew 9:10)

Community Events - deepening our relationships

Church events are designed to be a place where we can get to know others at Verge. Sunday mornings are an incredible time to gather. We have fellowship before and after the service. Sometimes, people stay so long after the service that it takes more than an hour for the building to empty. You cannot hide in a church like ours. We want to be in community together. Our events are created to provide more opportunities to deepen our community relationships. We are not creating events to entertain (although we do have fun), we are creating events to deepen our relationships with one another.
